The UK food hygiene register, and how it moves

Most services show you what the register says today. This one keeps what it said yesterday as well, every day since 2022, so the movement itself can be looked at: businesses opening, closing, changing hands, and ratings going up and down.

What you can ask it

• Which areas have the highest and lowest share of top-rated businesses.
• Where the low-rated businesses actually are, rather than how many there are.
• Which premises change hands repeatedly - the addresses that keep reopening under a new name.
• Which long-standing 4s and 5s have gone longest without a re-inspection.
• The full history of a single premises, including the records it held under previous operators.

Rating age is the part nobody publishes

The register publishes a rating and the date it was given. It does not publish how stale that makes it. Because this explorer keeps the daily history, it can show how long a business has held its current rating and how that compares with others in the same area.

Where the data comes from

The Food Standards Agency's open data, collected from every UK local authority and reconciled here each night against what we already held. It is the official register - the difference is that we keep the previous versions of it.
